Dioecious rhizomatous, perennial, herb, 0.1-1 m high. Fl. brown-red, Aug to Nov. Sandy clay, lateritic loam, sand or lateritic sand, gravelly clay. Plains & flats, ironstone ridges, swampy areas.

Scientific Description

Rhizomes spreading, hairy. Basal sheath hairy, dull, striate. Culms terete, internal structure (at base of culm) solid, hairy or glabrous, not striate, not marbled, not fasciculate. Culm 120-800 mm long. Sheaths (including blade) dull, striate, glabrous, margins not translucent. Apex glabrous. Dioecious (with separate male and female plants). Male and female inflorescences similar, posture (male inflorescences only) More or less erect, Culms branched below the inflorescence. Male spikelet 4-6.5 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, Outer bract 3.5-5.7 mm long, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Perianth glabrous. 2.5-4.5 mm long. Inner bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Inner bract 2.5-3.5 mm long. Filament 3-3.5 mm long. Anther 1-2.3 mm long. Female spikelet 6.5-12 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Outer bract 4.5-8.5 mm long. Perianth glabrous. 6-6.2 mm long. Inner bracts 5.5-9 mm long, glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Style one, arising centrally from the ovary apex. 6-8 mm long. Fruit capsule. Flowering Time August, September, October or November. Botanical Province South-West, IBRA Bioregions Swan Coastal Plain, Avon Wheatbelt, Jarrah Forest, Mallee or Esperance.
