Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system and census were set to read-only mode on 1 October 2025. Taxonomic updates published since this time are not being reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or Western Australia’s taxonomic names census (Nomos). Conservation listings displayed on Florabase may also be out of date. Please refer to DBCA’s Threatened species and communities webpage for the most recent Threatened and Priority Flora List, noting that recent taxonomic updates are similarly not included. Our database migration is moving to a staging phase. We thank you for your patience as we ensure the integrity of our biodiversity data, develop new workflows, and train staff to use the new systems. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.

The notice period started at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, 1 October 2025 +08:00 and will end at 12:00 pm on Friday, 1 January 2027 +08:00.

Sign up for Florabase by filling in this form. You don’t need an account to use Florabase, but it is necessary if you wish to access specimen data. Asterisked fields must be filled in.

Credentials
Your username must be between 4 and 64 characters long.
Your password must be at least 8 characters long and contain at least one lowercase letter, one uppercase letter, one number and one punctuation character.
Requested Access

Please note that Specimen access costs AU$2,000 per year with certain exceptions.

Free access to specimen data will be granted—subject to approval—to: (a) Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions staff and volunteers, (b) students, (c) academics and researchers, and (d) collaborative projects. If there is no demonstrable need for your access to specimen data, your request will be refused. Applicants with a genuine need for accurate specimen point data will be given full access to this data. Applicants with no need for this will be given specimen point data that is accurate to the nearest 0.1 degrees.

Collection Notice

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) collects personal information through Florabase for the purposes of:

  • authenticating and managing user access to Florabase
  • maintaining the security and integrity of the system
  • providing user support and administering user accounts
  • monitoring and auditing system usage
  • meeting legal, regulatory and government record-keeping requirements.

The personal information collected may include your name, email address, username and information relating to your use of the system. If you choose not to provide the requested personal information, you may be unable to access certain Florabase functionality, create an account, or receive support services.
