Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s flora taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not currently being reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or the census. The project team is now conducting testing of the migrated data, and a further update will be provided by the end of the financial year (1 July). Prostrate, dioecious annual, herb, to 0.02 m high, leaves oblanceolate, elliptical, 2-25 mm long; 0.5-5 mm wide; spike white, ovoid-cylindrical, 3-25 mm long, 2-5 mm wide; bract 0.5-0.6 mm long; bracteole 1-1.1 mm long; tepal 1-1.5 mm long; 5 fertile stamens; ovary glabrous; style straight, 0.08-0.01 mm long, central fixed to ovary. Fl. white, May to Jun. Alluvial soils, yellow sand, sandstone. Rock outcrops, ridge summits, coastal dunes.

Scientific Description

Annuals, stems several, more or less prostrate, glabrescent or glabrous, with nodose hairs. Leaves present, 2-25 mm long, 0.5-5 mm wide, glabrescent, with nodose hairs; basal rosette absent; cauline leaves alternate. Spikes white, ovoid or cylindrical, clustered, with densely arranged flowers. Bracts 0.5-0.8 mm long, colourless, hairy, not awned or mucronate, with an obscure midrib. Bracteoles 0.9-1.2 mm long, colourless, hairy, not awned or mucronate, with an obscure midrib. Outer tepals 1-1.5 mm long, entire. Inner tepals 1-1.5 mm long, glabrous within. Style 0.08-0.1 mm long, straight, centrally fixed to ovary. Seeds 0.9-1.1 mm long, glossy, black or brown. Distribution: Northern Botanical Region; IBRA regions: Northern Kimberley.
