Rhizomatous, perennial, herb (sedge-like), 0.5-1.5 m high. Fl. Sep or Nov. Sand, loam, clay, ironstone. Seasonally inundated or damp habitats.

Scientific Description
Rhizomes spreading, hairy. Basal sheath glabrous, dull, striate. Culms terete, internal structure (at base of culm) hollow, glabrous, striate, not marbled, not fasciculate. Culm 390-1360 mm long. Sheaths (including blade) appressed throughout, dull, striate, glabrous, margins not translucent. Apex elongated, glabrous. Dioecious (with separate male and female plants). Male and female inflorescences similar, posture (male inflorescences only) More or less erect, Culms branched below the inflorescence. Male spikelet 5-7.8 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, Outer bract 4-5.4 mm long, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Perianth glabrous. 2.5-3.7 mm long. Inner bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Inner bract 3.5-4 mm long. Filament 3-3.8 mm long. Anther 1.4-1.8 mm long. Female spikelet 10.5 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Outer bract 12 mm long. Perianth glabrous. 7.5 mm long. Inner bracts 10 mm long, glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Style one, arising centrally from the ovary apex. 10 mm long. Fruit capsule.
