Rhizomatous, perennial, herb or (fern), 0.01-0.15 m high, sterile frond simple; stipe bases not persistent; fertile blade spike-like; vernation not circinnate. Fl. May. Clay loams, red loam, yellow sand. Shallow soil pockets subject to flooding, amongst rocks or along streambanks.
