Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or in the census. We are hoping to be able to reinstate services around December 15; we will provide an update at that time.

The notice period started at 9:00 am on Wednesday, 1 October 2025 +08:00 and will end at 12:00 pm on Monday, 15 December 2025 +08:00.

Usually erect or somewhat trailing annual or biennial, herb, to 1.5 m high. Fl. pink/red/purple, Mar to Jun. Yellow-grey sand over sandstone, black soils. Banks of rivers & channels, roadsides, waste grounds.

Scientific Description

Twining or climbing plants, herb. Stems terete, not spiny, hairy; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, compound, alternate, not continuous with stem, 40-75 mm long, hairy, with simple hairs, flat with flat margins; margins entire; tubercles absent, pinnately arranged, terminal leaflet present, stalked; pustules or glands absent. Stipules present and persistent to older leaves, 5-6.5 mm long, without glands, ribbed. Bracteoles absent. Corolla multicoloured, mostly pink, red or purple, with some pink, red or purple spots, streaks or blotches. Stamens ten. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), 80-90 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, sessile or subsessile, not constricted between the seeds, round in cross-section, hairy, with simple hairs, not beaked. Flowers in March, April, May and June. Occurs in the Northern Botanical Province, in the Northern Kimberley, Victoria Bonaparte and Central Kimberley IBRA regions.
