Rhizomatous, tufted perennial, herb, 0.35-1 m high, culms broad, somewhat flattened; spikelets several-flowered; female flowers with 3 style branches. Fl. brown, Apr to May or Sep to Oct. Sand, peaty sand, sandy clay. Swamps and other wet or seasonally wet sites.
