Rhizomatous, tufted perennial, herb, 0.2-1.2 m high, culms terete; spikelets erect, 10-20-flowered, with rigid black glumes at base and apex. Fl. brown, Sep to Oct. Peaty sand. Swamps and other wet or seasonally wet sites.
