Rhizomatous, perennial, herb (rush-like), ca 0.35 m high. Fl. Sep to Oct. Sandy & clayey soils. Swamps, saline clay flats.

Scientific Description

Rhizomes spreading, hairy. Basal sheath glabrous, glossy, striate. Culms terete, internal structure (at base of culm) hollow, glabrous, not striate, not marbled, not fasciculate. Culm 160-450 mm long. Sheaths (including blade) appressed throughout, dull, not striate, glabrous, margins translucent. Apex finely pointed, glabrous. Dioecious (with separate male and female plants). Male and female inflorescences distinctly dissimilar, posture (male inflorescences only) Distinctly drooping, Culms unbranched below the inflorescence. Male spikelet 7-12 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, Outer bract 5.5-7 mm long, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Perianth glabrous. 3.5-4.2 mm long. Inner bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Inner bract 4-6 mm long. Filament 0.5-1.6 mm long. Anther 1.7-2 mm long. Female spikelet 7-10 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, margins thin and translucent, Apex acute. Outer bract 5.5-7 mm long. Perianth glabrous. (3.5-)4.5-6 mm long. Inner bracts 3-4.2 mm long, glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Style three (or three-branched). 3-8 mm long. Fruit indehiscent (nut). Flowering Time September or October.
