Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s flora taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not currently being reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or the census. The project team is now conducting testing of the migrated data, and a further update will be provided by the end of the financial year (1 July). Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus bright green, clavate, to 2–4 cm tall, 3–6 mm diam. Structure with a primary filament bearing 24–30 lateral filaments per whorl, each branching into (3–) 4 (–5) secondary segments that form a faceted cortex. Each facet with 1 dichotomously branched, eventually deciduous hair. Gametangial cysts 4–12 per lateral filament, globose, 100–150 µm diam.; gametangia 4–8 per cyst.

Distribution. A tropical Indo-Pacific species. In W.A. it occurs south to Ningaloo Reef.

Habitat. Epilithic in the shallow subtidal and lower intertidal, locally very common and often occurring in dense clusters (e.g. at Goodwyn Island in the Dampier Archipelago).
