Scientific Description
Habit and structure. Thallus firm, medium green, pulvinate to lobed, to 2 cm high and 2–8(–12) cm across. Utricles in small clusters, irregularly cylindrical to slightly clavate, 130–240 µm in diameter near apices, to 375 µm in diameter somewhat below apices, 900–1700 µm long; utricle wall at apex thickened to form a moderate to prominent, lamellate, galeate cap (to 60 µm thick); hairs absent. Medullary filaments 26–60 µm in diameter, without plugs.
Reproduction. Gametangia fusiform, 65–100 µm in diameter, 370–450 µm long.
Distribution. From Cliff Head, W. Aust., to Sorrento, Vic., and the north coast of Tas.
Habitat. Occurs in the upper sublittoral in pools on rock platforms and to 32 m deep, usually on rough-water coasts.
