Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s flora taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not currently being reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or the census. The project team is now conducting testing of the migrated data, and a further update will be provided by the end of the financial year (1 July). Short-lived, prostrate to decumbent annual, herb, 0.1-0.7 m high, leaves ovate, 4-130 mm long, 1-48 mm wide; spikes purple-mauve, ovoid, 10-60 mm long, 12-20 mm wide; bract dark brown, 4-5.6 mm long; bracteole 4-5.6 mm; tepals 7.7-8.3 mm long; fertile stamens 2 staminodes 3; ovary hairy; style curved, 1.9-2.6 mm long, eccentrically fixed to ovary. Fl. white-pink, Apr to Oct. Stony clay, alluvium. Floodplains, clay flats.

Scientific Description

Annuals, stems several, more or less erect, glabrescent, with verticillate hairs. Leaves present, 4-130 mm long, (1-)2-48 mm wide, glabrescent, with verticillate hairs; basal rosette present; cauline leaves alternate. Spikes magenta, ovoid or cylindrical, clustered, with densely arranged flowers. Bracts 3.8-4.9 mm long, coloured, hairy, not awned or mucronate, with an obscure midrib. Bracteoles 4-5.6 mm long, coloured, hairy, not awned or mucronate, with a prominent midrib. Outer tepals 7.7-8.3 mm long, not entire. Inner tepals 6.6-7.7 mm long, glabrous within. Style (1.9-)2-2.5(-2.6) mm long, curved, obliquely fixed to ovary. Seeds (1.2-)1.3-1.4(-1.5) mm long, glossy, brown. Distribution: Eremaean Botanical Region; IBRA regions: Gascoyne, Pilbara.
