Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus light to dark green, to 4 cm tall, with several simple or sparingly branched percurrent axes arising from a common holdfast. Primary axes terete, basally 380–500 µm diam., tapering to 50–100 µm diam. near the apices, occasionally proximally naked for a short distance but distally bearing numerous simple ramuli, these basally constricted, to 2 mm long, 20–25 µm diam., generally of similar diameter throughout, with rounded apices. Gametangia lateral near the base of ramuli, 110–140 µm long, 40–55 µm diam., clavate to ellipsoidal, with a basal plug and a terminal papilla. Plastids small, barely distinguishable, c. 2 µm diam.; pyrenoids apparently absent, but central clear regions evident in chloroplasts.

Distribution. Known from the Houtman Abrolhos Islands to the Maret Islands, W.A. Also in Lord Howe Island, China, southern Japan and South Africa.

Habitat. Epilithic in the subtidal.
