Scientific Description
Habit and structure. Thallus forming hemispherical hummocks, olive or light to dark brown, to 5 cm broad and tall, dichotomously to irregularly branched, divaricate with rounded axils. Branch width tapering from base to apex, generally less than 10 mm diam. near the base, to 2 mm near apices. Medulla of 2 or 3 layers of large hyaline cells 30–100 µm wide, grading to a single-layered cortex of pigmented cells 5–10 µm wide. Plurilocular organs in discrete subcircular to irregularly shaped sori 100–250 µm wide, associated with hair tufts. Plurilocular organs uniseriate, 12–20 µm long, 4–6 µm diam.
Distribution. Widespread in tropical to warm-temperate seas; Occurs in W.A. as far south as Point Peron (near Perth).
Habitat. Epilithic in the intertidal and shallow subtidal.
