Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus green to yellowish green, firm, flabellate, to 25 mm tall and 40 mm wide. Holdfast a mass of rhizoidal cells that are only occasionally septate. Primary filaments polychotomously branched, but generally only 2–4 branches of each node becoming prominent; cells of primary filaments near apices clavate and 40–50 μm diam., becoming cylindrical below and 160–180 μm diam., undivided or occasionally subdivided into 2 or 3 cells by transverse walls. Nodes conspicuously darker in pressed specimens. Interstitial cells between axial filaments in 2 layers. Secondary cortication formed by digitate extensions of the interstitial cells, absent in distal region of blade, initiating from interstitial cells at c. 4 axial cells from the apex, and generally covering the lower axial cells 5–10 cells from the margin.

Distribution. Known from northern Australia south to the Houtman Abrolhos Islands on the west coast; also in Indonesia, the Solomon Islands and the Philippines.

Habitat. Epilithic in the intertidal and shallow subtidal.
