Scientific Description
Habit and structure. Thallus erect, olive to dark green, occasionallly with orange margins, to 4 cm tall, mostly solitary, growing in unconsolidated substrata, attached by a submerged bulbous rhizomatous holdfast. Stipes terete, 2–3 mm long and 1–2 mm diam. Blades reniform, flattened, spongy, to 20 mm tall and 30 mm wide. Structure of blade multistratose, with interwoven cylindrical siphons 25–65 µm diam., these irregularly dichotomously branched, with frequent constrictions. Siphon apices cylindrical. Plastids subspherical to ellipsoidal, 4–5 µm long, each with a pyrenoid.
Distribution. Widespread in the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.
Habitat. Typically growing in sandy or muddy substrata in the intertidal.
