Erect, spreading, multi-stemmed shrub, 0.2-1.5 m high. Fl. orange & red, Aug to Nov. Grey sand, sandy clay. Swampy flats, undulating plains, dunes, coastal areas.

Scientific Description

Erect or prostrate,spreading or scrambling, shrub, spindly shrub (broom-like). Stems terete, not spiny, glabrous; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, simple, opposite, not continuous with stem, 10-50 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, glabrous, terete; tubercles absent; pustules or glands absent. Stipules apparently absent even from the youngest leaves. Pedicel present, 5.5-7 mm long, glabrous. Bracteoles absent. Calyx 4-6.5 mm long, not accrescent, glabrous, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 10-13.5 mm long, multicoloured, mostly red or orange, with some red or orange spots, streaks or blotches; claws present; standard 9.5-13 mm long, glabrous, not auriculate, wings 7.5-9 mm long, not auriculate, keel 7-9 mm long, beaked, not auriculate, glabrous. Stamens ten; anthers 0.5-0.7 mm long, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments free (or united at the very base), 7-10.2 mm long. Ovary sessile or subsessile, glabrous; style 11-12 mm long, glabrous, not bearded, terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), 12-15 mm long, 9-10 mm wide, sessile or subsessile, not constricted between the seeds, flat or compressed, glabrous, beaked. Flowers in August, September, October and November. Occurs in the South-West Botanical Province, in the Avon Wheatbelt, Jarrah Forest, Mallee, Warren, Esperance and Swan Coastal Plain IBRA regions.
