Scientific Description

Twining or climbing plants, shrub, spindly shrub (broom-like). Stems terete, not spiny, glabrous; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, compound, alternate, not continuous with stem, 50-110 mm long, glabrous, flat with recurved margins; margins entire; tubercles absent, leaflets 3-5, pinnately arranged, terminal leaflet present, stalked; pustules or glands absent. Stipules present and persistent to older leaves, 1.6-2.2 mm long, without glands, ribless. Pedicel present, 5-5.5 mm long, glabrous. Bracteoles absent. Calyx 3.8-4.6 mm long, not accrescent, glabrous, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 10-11.4 mm long, multicoloured, mostly purple or blue, with some purple or blue spots, streaks or blotches; claws present; standard 9-10.5 mm long, glabrous, not auriculate, wings 8.6-9.5 mm long, not auriculate, keel 6.6-7 mm long, not beaked, not auriculate, glabrous. Stamens ten; anthers 0.5 mm long, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments united in an open sheath with one free stamen, 4.2-5 mm long. Ovary sessile or subsessile, glabrous; style 4.2-5 mm long, glabrous, not bearded, terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), sessile or subsessile, not constricted between the seeds, round in cross-section, not beaked. Flowers in July, August, September and October.
