Spreading shrub, 0.3-1.5 m high. Fl. red-purple, Mar to Oct. Sandy soils, sandy alluvium, gravelly loam. Along drainage lines, rocky hillsides, sandplains.

Scientific Description

Erect, shrub, spindly shrub (broom-like). Stems terete, not spiny, hairy; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, simple, alternate, not continuous with stem, 15-50 mm long, 7-24 mm wide, hairy, with simple hairs, flat with flat margins; margins entire; tubercles absent; pustules or glands absent. Stipules present and persistent to older leaves, 3.5-4.6 mm long, without glands, ribless. Pedicel present, 1-1.4 mm long, hairy. Bracteoles present but early deciduous. Calyx 2.6-3 mm long, not accrescent, hairy, with simple hairs, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 8-9.7 mm long, multicoloured, mostly red or purple, with some red or purple spots, streaks or blotches; claws absent, wings 6-7 mm long, not auriculate, keel 8-9.5 mm long, not beaked, not auriculate, glabrous. Stamens ten, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments united in an open sheath with one free stamen, 5.5-8 mm long. Ovary sessile or subsessile, glabrous; style 7.5-9 mm long, glabrous, not bearded, terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), 17-18 mm long, 2-4 mm wide, sessile or subsessile, not constricted between the seeds, round in cross-section, hairy, with simple hairs, not beaked. Flowers in March, April, May, June, July, August, September and October. Occurs in the Northern and Eremaean Botanical Province, in the Great Sandy Desert, Pilbara, Carnarvon, Gascoyne, Little Sandy Desert, Murchison, Central Kimberley, Ord-Victorian-Plain, Tanami and Dampierland IBRA regions.
