Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or in the census. We are hoping to be able to reinstate services around December 15; we will provide an update at that time.

Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus dark green, upright, 4.5 cm tall and 9 cm wide, coarse and wiry. Branching from each primary axial cell, alternate or secund, subsequently with 2–4 adventitious laterals from mature nodes. Attachment by a stout basal cell, with additional descending rhizoids arising from proximal ends of lower cells and forming a matted stipe. Cells cylindrical to clavate [L:B 5–10], 120–250 µm diam. near apices, to 350 µm diam. near the base.

Distribution. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific.

Habitat. Epilithic in the intertidal.
