Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or in the census. We are hoping to be able to reinstate services around December 15; we will provide an update at that time.

Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus dark red, cartilaginous, with terete prostrate axes 125–175 μm diam., attached to the substratum by extensive clusters of rhizoids arising from cortical cells. Erect axes mostly unbranched but with occasional lateral branches, terete, 125–150 μm diam., tapering to c. 50 μm diam. below a fine point. Medulla of longitudinal filaments 10–15 μm diam., grading to a smaller-celled cortex. Outer cortical cells in surface view irregularly shaped, mostly equidimensional.

Reproduction. Reproductive structures not observed.

Distribution. Known from Paradise Beach and nearby Five Fingers Reef, Coral Bay, Western Australia.

Habitat. Epilithic on dead coral in the shallow subtidal.
