Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus tufted, dark red, with creeping and erect axes to 2.5 cm long. Lower portions mostly terete, but erect axes (at least distally) distinctly flattened and irregularly subdichotomously branched or palmate. Axes cartilaginous, flattened portion 0.5–1.0 mm wide. Medullary cells 12–20 μm diam.; outer cortical cells equidimensional or slightly longitudinally elongate in surface view, 5–12 μm diam.

Reproduction. Tetrasporangia in inflated nemathecia covering branch apices, cruciately, decussately or often tetrahedrally divided, 25–35 × 20–25 μm. Other reproductive structures not observed.

Distribution. Probably widespread in the Indo-Pacific, in Western Australia south to the Perth region.

Habitat. Epilithic in the subtidal.
