Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s flora taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not currently being reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or the census. Due to the rapidly approaching holiday season and associated agency and facility soft closures, along with the substantial work involved in data mapping, cleaning, and verification, the migration to the new collection management software is not expected to occur before 1 March 2026, when a further update will be provided. Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus to 4 mm tall, light red. Primary axes ecorticate, 60–100 µm diam.; periaxials 200–250 µm long; pseudolaterals to 1.2 mm long, 2 or 3 times dichotomously divided from suprabasal cell, every (1 or) 2 cells; ultimate branches 8–10 cells long. Basal cell of pseudolateral 40–60 µm diam. [L:B c. 1], more distal cells 25–35 µm diam. [L:B 3–4], tapering to elongate cells 10–15 µm diam.

Reproduction. Only immature tetrasporangial stichidia known in the north-western Australia collection, these arising as 1 branch of the second dichotomy of pseudolaterals, with a 1- or 2-celled pedicel, and 7 or 8 fertile segments each with 4 tetrasporangia. Sporangial cover cells 2 per tetrasporangium.

Distribution. Widespread in warmer seas.
