Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s flora taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not currently being reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or the census. Due to the rapidly approaching holiday season and associated agency and facility soft closures, along with the substantial work involved in data mapping, cleaning, and verification, the migration to the new collection management software is not expected to occur before 1 March 2026, when a further update will be provided. Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus epiphytic; prostrate axes 2–3 mm long, 60–70 µm diam. [segment L:B c. 1], attached by branched multicellular rhizoids, these with a single primary cell cutting off 6–9 radiating dichotomously branched arms. Lateral branches to 75 µm diam. [segment L:B 0.5–1], determinate and simple or with 1 or 2 laterals. Trichoblasts to 650 µm long, when young secundly branched, but appearing dichotomous when mature; basal 1 or 2 cells equidimensional, more distal cells progressively narrower and more elongate.

Reproduction. Reproductive structures not observed.

Distribution. Known from Japan, eastern Australia (Queensland and Lord Howe Island) and north-western Australia.

Habitat. Epiphytic on Lobophora sp. in the intertidal.
