Caespitose annual or perennial (rarely), grass-like or herb, 0.4-3 m high, inner bristles of involucre surrounding spikelets woolly-hairy. Fl. red-brown/yellow-brown/white, May to Aug. Loam, clay, pockets of sand, lateritic gravel. On valley floors, creeks, disturbed habitats.
