Monoecious, rhizomatous, tufted, colonial perennial, grass-like or herb (sedge), 1 m high. Fl. brown/green, Sep to Dec. Sandy clay, black peaty sand. Swamps.

General Biology. Growth form. Sedge. Life form. Perennial. Reproduction. Rhizomes and seed. Dispersal. Water, soil movement, possibly animals. Fire response. Possibly tolerant to fire due to thick rhizomes.
Notes. Widely naturalised in temperate regions. Possesses thick, woody rhizomes. Likely to be tolerant of frost, salt and water logging. Salinity inhibits germination of seed.
Additional information. Origin. Northern Africa, Europe, temperate and tropical Asia. History of use/introduction. Stream bank stabilisation.
Suggested method of management and control. Physically control only in small or isolated populations. Try 1% glyphosate.
