Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s flora taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not currently being reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or the census. Due to the rapidly approaching holiday season and associated agency and facility soft closures, along with the substantial work involved in data mapping, cleaning, and verification, the migration to the new collection management software is not expected to occur before 1 March 2026, when a further update will be provided. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.

Virgate, ascending perennial, herb or shrub, 0.15-0.5 m high. Fl. white-cream-yellow-orange, May or Jul to Oct. Red sand, sandy loam. Sandplains, edges of lateritic breakaways, stony creek beds.

Scientific Description

Stems ribbed. Leaves flat, 5-25 mm long, 1.5-3 mm wide, Indumentum absent (leaves glabrous); margins entire. Bracteoles absent. Pedicel pedicellate, Pedicel length the pedicels 7-10 mm long, glabrous. Calyx lobes present, Calyx length 2.5-4 mm long, glabrous. Corolla orange, 18-22 mm long, without auricles, not spurred, glabrous on the outside, hairy on the inside; central lobes 8-10 mm long, with wings; outer lobes 10-13 mm long, wings present on both sides, 1-1.3 mm wide. Anthers free. Ovary inferior, not gibbose; style 7-10 mm long, glabrous; indusium single, hairy; ovules more than two. Flowers in May, June, July, August, September and October. Occurs in the Great Victoria Desert (GVD), Central Ranges (CR), Gibson Desert (GD) and Great Sandy Desert (GSD) IBRA Region(s), of the Eremaean (E) Botanical Province.
