Tufted annual or perennial, grass-like or herb (sedge), 0.03-0.5 m high, spikelets 1-5, 1.5-2.5 mm diam; glumes with a straight mucro; style branches 2; nut very compressed. Fl. green-brown, Jan to Feb or Apr to Dec. White, clayey or black peaty sand, sandy clay, sandy loam, clay. Winter-wet depressions, swamps, creeks, ironstone ridges.
