Tufted annual, grass-like or herb (sedge), 0.02-0.1 m high, spikelets 3-8, in a dense globular cluster; style 3-branched; stamens 1(-2); nut 0.6-0.7 mm long. Fl. yellow-green, Sep to Dec or Jan. Grey, black peaty or orange clayey sand, loam, sandy clay. Swamps, creeks, winter-wet depressions.
