Service Notice

The Western Australian Herbarium’s collections management system, WAHerb, and DBCA’s flora taxonomic names application, WACensus, have been set to read-only mode since 1 October 2025. Recent taxonomic changes are not currently being reflected in Florabase, herbarium collections, or the census. Due to the rapidly approaching holiday season and associated agency and facility soft closures, along with the substantial work involved in data mapping, cleaning, and verification, the migration to the new collection management software is not expected to occur before 1 March 2026, when a further update will be provided. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.

The notice period started at 9:45 am on Friday, 12 December 2025 +08:00 and will end at 12:00 pm on Monday, 2 March 2026 +08:00.

New to Nuytsia

NUYTSIA

Haemodoraceae hits the spotlight with a suite of taxonomic novelties published today in Nuytsia alongside research on Goodeniaceae, Myrtaceae, Scrophulariaceae and a genus of green algae (Pseudobryopsis).

There are dedications galore including taxa named for eagle-eyed survey botanists Elizabeth Sandiford and John Clarkson (Haemodorum), botanical artist and taxonomist Ellen Hickman (Conostylis), passionate educator and evolutionary biologist Rachel Jabaily (Goodenia), and citizen scientists Maree and Graham Goods (Scaevola). Caring for country from a cultural perspective is acknowledged by the naming of a species of Anigozanthos for the Merningar Bardok Knapp family from Western Australia’s south coast, while a species of Haemodorum from central Queensland is named as a mark of respect for the Ghungalu people upon whose traditional lands it is found.

Pictured here is Ellen Hickman’s exquisite botanical illustration of Haemodorum sandifordiae Hopper & E.J.Hickman, which is known from peat swamps between Northcliffe and Walpole where it has been observed flowering in response to hot summer burns.
